family member listed as Illegitimate in 1800's birth records?

I am doing some research into my family history, and I located my great great grandfather’s birth record. The record’s list his as Frederick Illegitimate and there is no father listed, only his mother. I am assuming this means that the mother was unwed, but is there any way to find out more information about the mother? Would he have been given up for adoption at that time or is it possible he stayed with the family? I know he kept his mother’s last name, but beyond that I’ve gotten kind of stuck. Any ideas/suggestions?
