All they’ll get is Denyce got angry…when it’s so much more loving than that…
This is excerpted from the documentary “Margaret Gaines” directed by Mustapha Hasnaoui. During preparation for the Margaret Garner, Graves met Ruth, a descendant of the Gaines family, the slave owning family in the work. When Ruth shares her view that, “To say that these farms were built on the back of slaves…they had help. White people working hard too. There are a lot of descendants of the Gaines family who are deeply upset… ” Denyse responds, “I understand you wanting to protect your family…but I find this such a hypocrisy that we are so concerned about the Gaines family and that they feel hurt. Do you know how many lives of African Americans were destroyed and we’re worried about whether we’re going to hurt…” Both Ruth and Denyse become visibly upset. But their appearances are different. I’ll post the interaction soon so you can judge for yourself. This video is Denyse reflecting afterwards on the interaction and how her response might be judged as “angry” but outsiders who do not share her perspective. What you think?
